Pixar’s 27th feature, Elemental, is still over a year away, but Disney and Pixar released a first look of the movie and gave us a glimpse of what the story will be about.

The first look image below is a sketch of the film’s two main characters: Ember and Wade. The unlikely pair live in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together, and the two will find out that despite their differences, they actually have a lot in common.

Elemental is directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur, Partly Cloudy) and is inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” Sohn said in a statement. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams — all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to Elemental.

“Our story is based on the classic elements — fire, water, land and air,” he continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”

We will see what could happen if these elements became alive when Elemental premieres on June 16, 2023.
